Mortar Firework found in Mountsfield Park

Huge unofficial firework display held in Lewisham park

A large but unofficial firework display was held in Mountsfield Park, Catford in Lewisham on Guy Fawkes Night.

While the event passed without incident, some residents in the area were concerned with the display.

Anna Ginty, 33, said the fireworks, which she heard from inside her home, went on for four hours.

She said: “It seemed professional as it was so big, but it was so close to my house that it felt a bit unsafe.

“If it was properly organised, it wouldn’t have been so close to the house.

“People wouldn’t be holding so many unofficial events if Blackheath Fireworks was still on.

“I would have gone if it was a proper event.”

Local resident Steffan Rees, 41, said it looked like a few groups of people had collaborated to put on the display.

He said: “I took the kids over to watch but went in around eight or nine.

“They had mortars and a few people came out to watch it.”

Louise, 54, who was walking her dogs in the park the following day, thought the big mess left by the display upset the whole neighbourhood.

She was surprised those responsible for the park didn’t clear the clutter the next day but conceded they may have done.

Louise said: “The mess was there at 11am, but was cleared by 3pm.

“There was a bonfire and loads of empty canisters.”

Mike, 67, didn’t see the fireworks but took his dog for a walk in the park the next day.

He said: “There were loads of boxes left.”

One resident, who held a private display in their home about two minutes from Mountsfield Park, said they didn’t hear the fireworks.

They added: “It’s a good thing, as long as it’s being done safely.”

Lewisham Council said they had nothing to do with the display.

Blackheath Fireworks, which was mostly funded by Lewisham Council, was cancelled for the fifth year in a row this year.
