Tory MP Bob Stewart has been charged with a public order offence relating to an alleged ‘racially aggravated’ incident last December.
The Beckenham MP, 73, has been charged with racially aggravated threatening or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour.
The alleged incident is said to have taken place in Belgravia, London, on Wednesday 14 December 2022.
Stewart, first elected in 2010, was also charged with threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress.
The second charge relates to the same incident but will give the court discretion regarding the racial element of the alleged abuse.
Police received an online report from a man alleging the abuse on 18 December 2022, and following an investigation submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which authorised the charges.
Stewart will appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 5 July.
