Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda 4 is the second-highest grossing film from the franchise, according to IMDB Box Office Mojo/BFI Box office stats.
June 2024 statistics show Kung Fu Panda 4 has amassed more than £21,805,140 in total gross revenue in the UK, representing a 36% increase over its predecessor Kung Fu Panda 3, and a 3.6% increase over Kung Fu Panda 2.
It is also only £9,008,385 short of the first film’s total gross, achieved in just three months since its release.
An interview with BFI alumni students revealed their thoughts on the success of this film, and how they would rank the franchise overall.
Fatima Butt ranked the franchise: Kung Fu Panda 2, 1, 3, and then 4.
She considered 2 the best due to the impactful development of Po’s relationship with the Furious Five.
While she found the villain in the fourth film good, she felt it was a bit underwhelming and didn’t live up to fan expectations.
Jemelia Essayah said: “It’s very surprising considering it’s an animated children’s film and the expectancy of the highest-grossing films would probably lie with more blockbuster-type films.”
She would overall rank it at the bottom of the franchise because, although it was good, it wasn’t the best in the series, in her opinion.
10 out of the 18 students said they preferred the original movie and that the franchise had lost its charm over time.
Reviewers on IMDB would agree with this statement.
