An award-winning community garden in southeast London is transforming lives and landscapes through its hands-on horticulture courses.
Walworth Garden educates members of the community on sustainable gardening skills, empowering them to support biodiversity within London and contribute to wider initiatives in London such as the Mayor of London’s sustainable city plan set to be met by 2050.
As part of London’s push for environmental sustainability, Walworth Garden serves as a vital hub for education with students being provided with the City & Guilds Practical Horticulture Skills qualification.
CEO and head gardener Oli Haden said: “We rebrand horticulture in environmental gardening so our students are encouraged to focus on an environmental approach to the work a gardener may do.
“Our impact is multifaceted, the impact of our environmental landscaping company is significant as we go out to the community and create gardens that are a positive contribution to the environment, rather than a drain on its resources.”
Walworth Garden offers the industry-standard Level 2 qualification that has a unique environmental focus, with graduates going on to work at esteemed organisations such as The Royal Parks, Thrive, and Burgess Park.
For Southwark residents, there are several free places on the Level 2 horticulture course available to support individuals on low incomes or those who are unemployed, providing access to an industry that has historically been difficult to enter.
