Two jailed after Southwark e-scooter shooting

Two men were given combined sentences of 30 years’ imprisonment for a 2023 e-scooter shooting in Walworth.

Kemar Edwards, 25, was sentenced to 18 years and Amari Bailey, 23, received 12 years at the Old Bailey on 29 January for their roles in the shooting of a man on 24 June two years ago, which caused serious injuries.

Both were convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent, while Edwards was also found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and possession of a firearm when prohibited.

The Trident South Specialist Crime Command team’s Detective Constable John Davis said: “Edwards and Bailey are extremely dangerous individuals, who had the arrogance to brazenly carry out a targeted shooting in the street in broad daylight on a summer’s afternoon.

“This posed a significant risk to the wider public.”

The court were told Bailey had pursued the victim, who was believed to be a rival gang member, after identifying him.

Bailey then contacted Edwards, who rode on an e-scooter to the victim’s location near Burgess Park and shot at him three times with a handgun, seriously injuring his arm and knee.

The gun used in the attack was never recovered.

It was one of 77 recorded gun crimes in Southwark in 2023, the sixth-highest number of any London borough, according to Metropolitan Police data.

London as a whole recorded 1,483 gun crimes that year, and this figure increased by 30.3% to 1,932 in 2024.
