Football fans up and down the country can score goals for their team by completing green activities in The Planet League Cup, a unique sustainability tournament.
Britain’s biggest climate action football campaign, kicked off on October 10 and runs for five weeks where fans can represent their team by completing environmentally friendly actions such as having a plant based meal, using their cars less and filling up reusable bottles with tap water.
Rich Holmes, Head of Partnerships at Planet League, said: “I was part of the pilot programme in the first summer of covid and that was four football clubs, West Brom, Leicester City, Nottingham Forrest and Notts County.
“The idea is we want to create a new generation of sustainable sports fans.
“Longer term we might see a world wide football event, we might see individual league events, we might see different sports taking part, the possibilities are endless really.”
Two and half years later and the initiative is gathering momentum with a total of 77 clubs from across the UK taking part including the likes of The Manchester United Foundation, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea Foundation and Liverpool Foundation with Cambridge United being the current holders of the trophy.
Northampton Town are hosting a ‘green match’ on October 29 vs Newport County where fans attending the match will be able to complete Planet League activities to win prizes.
Paul Mitchell from QPR in the Community Trust said: “For us it’s really just a chance to get the children in our school programmes, soccer schools and development centres aware of what’s going on around the world in terms of climate change but also aware of what’s going on right on their doorstep in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
“The main thing is to raise awareness but also to give the opportunity to compete which everyone always likes.”
There will be a focus on a particular theme each week, such as energy or food and travel.
The club whose fans take the most action will win the Planet League Cup, while the fan who scores the most goals will win a UK holiday.
